The handicrafts industry in India has existed for as long as one can remember. However, India’s industrial renaissance of the 90s and 2000s brought along with it some barriers to entry for new retailers. Leading exporters were forced to place large MOQs and due to the intricate process of handcrafting, lead times also increased with increase in production. This meant that only the big players of the home fashion market could afford to carry ranges of Indian handmade rugs and accessories…a tragedy indeed.

In 2013, with a resolve to change this, The Rug Republic was launched. TRR is the brainchild of Aditya Gupta, Founder & CEO of Studio Sharda.

TRR immediately revolutionised the industry by cataloguing styles as well as carrying stock, this meant no MOQs and comparatively minimal lead times. Now retailers of all sizes could bring the magic of Indian Arts to their customers.

With a lot of hard work and a little bit of luck, today TRR has a loyal customer base in over 90 countries across 6 continents and we are growing swiftly!

Design & Construction:

Our design philosophy was lucid to us even before the brand even came about. Here’s how we like to say it: an ode to classical technique, an embrace of modern design.

In our collection, one can find designs inspired by places ranging from the Taj Mahal to the Churches of Mexico, the tribes of Africa and then some. TRR aims to amalgamate global cultures into wonderful creations to adorn your home.

The Rug Republic offers 13 distinct constructions in just as many materials, ranging from luxurious bamboo viscose all the way to new age PET yarn made from recycled plastic bottles. This versatility means TRR has something for everyone beyond all barriers (weather, kids, pets etc) …and as a cherry on top, we offer free shipping worldwide on all rugs!

Beyond Business:

Ever since its conception, TRR has been focused on growing not as a brand, but as an eco-system of designers, artisans, office workers and beyond. We follow a ‘promote from within’ strategy and offer employment opportunities to the families of our employees based on their skill set. Along with this, TRR also works closely with charitable organisations to bring aid and comfort to the underprivileged.

Our Founder & CEO recently chronicled his journey to the peak of Mount Everest and is using that book to raise money for the Child Rights & You organisation. (

When we talk about an eco-system, the biggest part of it is surely the environment. TRR is a pioneer in the sustainable home fashion space. We were one of the first people to introduce PET yarn (the plastic bottles you see thrown on the street are recycled into rugs, approximately 300 bottles = 1 small sized rug!) and since recycled tons of plastic into avant-garde home fashion that elevates homes all around the globe. In fact, The Rug Republic is the only Indian brand to be given the GRS (Global Recycling Standard) Certificate. Our main production centre and head office in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh is largely solar powered, and we are working on methods to go carbon neutral as soon as possible.

We are proud to say that when you buy TRR, you don’t buy a product but an idea. An idea of consciousness, an idea of sustainability and as always…an idea of style.
